A legacy of excellence and passion
At the foot of the mighty Simonsberg lies an unexpected jewel – Plaisir de Merle. Nestling in the dramatic scenery of the surrounding mountain landscape, grapes with an extraordinary variety of aromas and elegance thrive here. Fine craftsmanship, a flair for nature and the nutrient-rich soils combine to make high-end, complex and rare wines. All under the watchful eye of the Simonsberg which not only creates an optimal microclimate but also, according to local tales, is home to the mystical griffin. The griffin on the Plaisir de Merles seal symbolises the estate’s deep roots in the region and its traditions. As majestic as the view of the Simonsberg, according to the legend they protect the treasures of this unique land and watch over the vineyards. The griffins are a sign of a proud past and the relentless pursuit of perfection. Niel Bester, winemaker at Plaisir de Merle, is also a devotee of this approach. He has been at the helm of the estate for 22 years and is the creator and guardian of some remarkable curiosities.
